As per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should schedule your child’s first visit with us by age one or within six months of eruption of their first tooth, whichever comes first. A dental home should be established by 12 months of age. A dental home means a place you can always go for all of your dental health needs. We, at Oceans, strive to be the premiere dental home for Mountainside, Westfield, Scotch Plains, Cranford, Fanwood and Garwood.
Checkup and cleaning
At your checkup you can expect us to check inside your mouth. We will count your teeth using our little tooth mirror and tooth counter. We will brush and floss your teeth, and if needed take x-ray pictures and apply fluoride vitamins. We will talk about what you like to eat and drink and what things are good and bad for your teeth. We will review at home brushing and flossing habits. We will be sure to answer any questions you have. And if you forget to ask one give us a call or send an email later on, we are more than happy to provide advice to better your teeth!
We find it is best to see our little ones in the morning. They are fresh and eager as opposed to tired and cranky towards the end of the day. Please keep this in mind when scheduling. If we are using laughing gas please have your child come on an empty stomach. No eating one hour prior to the appointment. A little bit of water is okay.
Note to parents:
It is extremely important in prepping your child for their dental visit that you do not project your past bad experiences or dental fears onto your child. We always make things as fun and painless as possible. We never use the words “hurt” “shot” “poke” “needle” and we ask the same from you. This will help contribute to an overall positive experience at Oceans. You can practice having your child open big and show their smile. You can discuss how the chair at the office is like a ride and it will move backwards as if they are laying in a bed.
We highly recommend this wonderful list of books to read with your child in the time leading up to the appointment. Please find them in our waiting room as well 🙂
